MOBIL AND WASHINGTON GAS PLAN NATURAL GAS FUELING STATION IN VIRGINIA

FAIRFAX, Va., March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobil Corporation and Washington Gas today announced the first joint venture in Virginia to operate a public fueling facility for vehicles powered by natural gas.
The facility will be located at an existing Mobil service station in Chantilly in Fairfax County. The companies said they are applying for county government permits and hope to have the site operational in a year.
Mobil, a major gasoline marketer, said it wants to test market demand for natural gas. Washington Gas has operated vehicles on natural gas for more than 13 years and today there are nearly 500 natural gas vehicles in the Washington metropolitan area, including the utility's own fleet.
Under the arrangement, Washington Gas will provide the compressor and storage equipment and supply the natural gas to be sold at the station. Mobil will provide the station site and natural gas pump dispensers.
In conjunction with other utilities, Mobil already sells natural gas at one of its service stations in Brooklyn, N.Y. and has announced plans to sell natural gas at up to three service stations in San Diego, California.
The Washington Gas-Mobil project is in response to efforts to increase the use of clean, alternative-fueled vehicles as required by the Clean Air Act of 1990. Mobil noted it also will be embarking on a major capital program at its five U.S. refineries to make reformulated gasoline to meet federal clean air standards. The Clean Air Act includes reformulated gasoline among clean alternative fuels.
