 MOBIL'S U.K. CORYTON REFINERY LATEST
 TO ACHIEVE INTERNATIONAL QUALITY CERTIFICATION
FAIRFAX, Va., May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobil Corporation (NYSE: MOB) said today that its refinery at Coryton in the United Kingdom has been certified by the International Standards Organization (ISO) as meeting the ISO 9002 standard for quality assurance in the refining of crude oil to produce petroleum products.
The Coryton refinery is operated by Mobil Oil Company, Ltd. (MOCL), the company's marketing and refining affiliate in the United Kingdom. MOCL received another ISO 9002 certificate for its storage, handling, and distribution of petroleum products.
During February, quality-assurance audit teams from Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance conducted in-depth inspections of both the refinery and MOCL's fuels marketing operations. The teams assessed whether the operations measured up to international standards assuring Mobil's customers of conformance to specified quality-systems requirements, and thereafter certified that both facilities were "Quality Systems" as described by ISO 9002.
"Certification of compliance with ISO quality-system standards gives any Mobil operation attaining it a competitive edge both at home and in export markets," said Robert O. Swanson, executive vice president for Mobil's Marketing and Refining Division. "We've learned that ISO 9000- series certification satisfies nearly all quality-system audit requirements from individual customers, so achieving it saves time for our customers as well as Mobil itself." Swanson said demand for such international quality assurance is growing everywhere.
The Switzerland-based ISO is an international coordinating group that works with various national standard-setting organizations such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the American Society for Quality Control (ASQC).
These and similar groups in other countries have established independent guides and benchmarks that assure buyers of strict adherence to quality specifications for certain products and services they purchase. Since buyers under pressure to deliver quality products have been demanding greater evidence of quality from suppliers, reliable independent standards of the sort provided by ISO have become far more important to customers in recent years.
Coryton is the second of Mobil's international refineries to be certified under the ISO 9000-series of quality-management standards. The first was Mobil's Adelaide refinery in Australia, which won ISO 9002 certification in 1991.
Numerous other Mobil affiliates have achieved ISO quality-assurance certification for their lubricant operations, beginning with Mobil Oil Francaise in 1989, and eventually including affiliates in the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Finland, and Portugal. Mobil's refueling facility at Gatwick airport in the United Kingdom and its road-paving subsidiary in Australia, Emoleum Limited, also hold ISO 9002 certification.
Certification that products or services meet ISO standards is not permanent but must be renewed every three years.
