MOBAY ANNOUNCES 60 PERCENT CAPACITY INCREASE STARTUP, PROCESS IMPROVEMENT

MOBAY ANNOUNCES 60 PERCENT CAPACITY INCREASE STARTUP,
                      PROCESS IMPROVEMENT
PITTSBURGH, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The Coatings Division of Mobay Corporation announced today the completion and startup of a 60-percent expansion of its capacity to produce two aliphatic (light-stable) polyisocyanates, essential components of high-performance high-solids, low-emissions outdoor coatings. The products are manufactured at Mobay's plant in Baytown, Texas.
Mobay, headquartered in Pittsburgh, is a Bayer USA Inc company. Effective Jan. 1, 1992, all Mobay businesses will operate under the corporate name Miles Inc.
Details on the multimillion-dollar capacity expansion and a concurrent process improvement program were reported here by Dr. Richard L. White, Mobay's senior executive vice president.
"Both capital investment programs were undertaken to meet the continuing growth in demand for improved, low-VOC (volatile organic compound) resins for outdoor coating applications," White explained.
The two products are Desmodur N-3390 and N-3300 polyisocyanates, which are used in high-solids formulations and provide excellent light stability and resistance to weathering. Both resins are polyisocyanate trimers based on HDI (hexamethylene diisocyanate), and serve as crosslinkers for durable, light-stable, two-component polyurethane coatings. Desmodur N-3390 polyisocyanate is a 90-percent solids HDI product, and the Desmodur N-3300 resin is a solventless version.
The expansion represents a 21 percent capacity increase for all Desmodur N resins produced by Mobay in the United States.
The process improvement completed at Mobay's Baytown facility results in resins that are near "water white" in color, similar to the same products produced by Bayer AG in Germany.
Trial batches of the resins manufactured with the process upgrade have been tested by Mobay's Quality Assurance Laboratories in accordance with APHA (American Pharmaceutical and Health Association) measurements and maintained an average color of 30 APHA. Mobay expects that full production batches of the new raw materials will be consistently less than 50 APHA. The same polyisocyanates produced by the former process ranged from 60 to 100 APHA.
Conforming the color of the resins produced in the United States with those manufactured in Europe will enable international companies to have standardized materials for use in various countries.
Mobay began production of the two Desmodur N trimers in 1985. Previously, the HDI polyisocyanates were imported from Bayer AG.
Mobay is part of the Bayer USA group of companies. Bayer USA is the U.S. management holding company of Bayer AG, Germany, and is a diversified group of companies with businesses in chemicals, healthcare and imaging technologies. In addition to Mobay, other major Bayer companies in the United States include Miles Inc. and Agfa Corporation. Bayer USA sales in 1990 were $5.9 billion, or about 20 percent of Bayer's sales worldwide. Effective Jan. 1, 1992, all Mobay businesses will operate under the corporate name Miles Inc.
