MNA 101--"introduction to your professional organization: the role of collective bargaining".

An exciting first time offering was held for Student Nurses during the Montana Nurses' Association (MNA) Convention in Helena this year. MNA Labor Director Pat Wise and Economic and General Welfare Chair Amy Hauschild wanted to engage nursing students attending their Montana Student Nurses Association meeting about issues surrounding Collective Bargaining and Professional Nursing.

The event was well attended; Montana State University BSN students were from Bozeman, Great Falls and Missoula. Information presented ranged from general concepts about MNA to specifics about what types of things are included in Professional Nurses labor contracts with their employers. A brief history, background and statistical information were provided about MNA. Key concepts presented were: MNA Protects/Promotes Excellence in Nurse Practice in the Workplace; Government Relations Activities; Collective Bargaining "nuts and bolts," Organizing facts/myths, Professional Development Support and Communications Issues.

Feedback from students was positive; they reported this was information they thought would be helpful to students in the future. Nursing students who have questions about any issue including MNA or Collective Bargaining should feel free to contact me at home (406) 543 4110.
