MK JOINT VENTURE IS APPARENT LOW BIDDER
TO DESIGN, BUILD, OPERATE PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND BRIDGE
BOISE, May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- William J. Agee, chairman and chief executive officer of Morrison Knudsen Corp. (MK) (NYSE: MRN), today announced that MK is part of a construction consortium that is apparent low bidder to design, build and operate an 8.27-mile bridge connecting New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
"This project is a giant step forward in our goal to not only design and build huge infrastructure projects, but to operate them as well," said Agee. "We look forward to working with our neighbor to the north to create a bridge that not only works, but is beautiful and practical."
As apparent low bidder, Strait Crossing Inc. -- a construction consortium made up of MK's Northern Construction Company Ltd. (35 percent), SCI Engineers and Constructors Inc. (sponsor at 40 percent), and GTMI (Canada) Inc. (25 percent) -- can now move forward to negotiate with Public Works Canada. The cost of the bridge and operations over a 35-year period is estimated at $1.245 billion (U.S.).
The Northumberland fixed-link crossing bridge will be pre-stressed concrete, box girder construction, including world-record spans. The bridge will be designed to withstand harsh weather and extreme temperatures, with careful and sensitive consideration to the surrounding environment.
The bridge will include two lanes of roadway with 23 approach spans and 44 main spans. Design and construction of the five-year project is scheduled to begin in August 1992. Operation will continue over a 35-year period.
Morrison Knudsen Corp. is an international company serving the environmental, industrial process, power and transportation markets with complete development, design/engineering, construction, operating and financial services.
