MK ACQUIRES RAIL MANUFACTURING FACILITY IN ARGENTINA

BOISE, Idaho, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Controlling interest in the most sophisticated manufacturing complex in Argentina -- a fully integrated facility located in Buenos Aires -- has been acquired by Morrison Knudsen Corp. (MK) (NYSE: MRN), the company announced today.
"This transaction is a significant step in our broad transportation strategy in Argentina and part of the government's ongoing privatization of freight and passenger train service," said William J. Agee, MK's chairman and chief executive officer.
The San Martin complex, which was purchased from the Argentine government, is a 500,000-square-foot facility presently employing 215 workers. It will accommodate MK's entire spectrum of passenger car, locomotive and component-parts activities in Argentina with state-of- the-art equipment.
An MK-led consortium, Metrovias, is negotiating with the Argentine government to operate and maintain three commuter rail lines and the subway system serving Buenos Aires. These negotiations are expected to be completed this summer.
MK's role in the consortium will be to provide technical personnel for maintenance of rolling stock and facilities; management of acquisition of any new rolling stock; management of manufacturing programs; and supply of locomotive and transit-car components.
In addition to MK, the consortium includes Fort Worth, Texas-based Burlington Northern Railroad and two Argentine firms.
"The San Martin complex is the best equipped facility in Argentina for maintenance, repair, and overhaul of locomotives and transit cars," said Agee. "It is a perfect fit with MK's long history of excellence in providing these services in the United States."
The facility has an existing contract for the manufacture and rehabilitation of subway cars, and MK is negotiating with the government to complete this project. Several other railcar contracts are pending, subject to funding approvals.
