MITSUBISHI MOTORS ENTERS SECOND QUARTER WITH INCREASED MOMENTUM -- FLAGSHIP LUXURY MODEL SALES SUCCESS CARRIES THROUGH PRODUCT LINE

CYPRESS, Calif., April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- In addition to surpassing year-to-date sales from the same period last year, Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc. (MMSA) recorded a 10 percent sales increase for the month of March, with total vehicle sales of 13,650 units. The company's luxury models boosted the sales momentum of the overall Mitsubishi Motors product line.
"We have placed continued emphasis on the marketing of our three luxury models -- 3000GT, Diamante and Montero -- and this past month's performance reflects the success of those efforts," said Kevin Ormes, vice president of sales for MMSA. "While 3000GT recorded the highest sales month in its history, the Diamante and Montero also climbed in volume, with Montero achieving its best month since April of 1991."
Ormes noted that the sales success of the company's luxury models have served to benefit other products in the company's product line. While Diamante, Montero and 3000GT have brought entirely new customers into Mitsubishi showrooms, the enhanced image and visibility of these models has also resulted in more consumer attention to such vehicles as Mitsubishi's newly redesigned Mirage model. During March, sales of the Mirage Coupe reached 1,300 units and approached its previous sales record.
"The introduction of our new Mirage has provided an attractive price/value choice for entry level buyers, and this past month's sales show the popularity of this model," said Ormes. "We will continue to work to meet the broad range of our customers' needs, from subcompacts to our luxury models. This is part of a larger strategy we are pursuing as we prepare to launch upcoming models."
MMSA also recorded another bright spot with increased sales in its truck models, with March sales reaching a total of 1,114 units and year-to-date sales up almost 34 percent over the period during the prior year.
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc. was established in 1982 by Mitsubishi Motors Corp., Tokyo, and markets a full line of subcompacts, mid-size sedans, sports coupes, grand touring sports cars, luxury performance sedans, sport wagons, light trucks and sport/utility vehicles.
