MITSUBISHI MOTORS EARNS SECOND HIGHEST JANUARY SALES IN COMPANY HISTORY, BOASTS 28 PERCENT INCREASE IN MONTH SALES ABOVE 1992 FIGURES

CYPRESS, Calif., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc. (MMSA) today announced month-end total vehicle sales of 14,460 units for the month of January, representing a 28 percent increase from a year earlier and the second highest January sales since the company began its operations in 1982. The company's truck sales alone gained 54 percent.
According to Kevin Ormes, vice president of sales for MMSA, a combination of an effective luxury lease program, stronger advertising and competitive customer incentives contributed to successful sales for the month.
"January represented the first month of a marketing plan designed around our core vehicles, and we exceeded all established sales objectives," said Ormes. Eclipse dominated the company's sales chart, reaching more than 5,000 units and showing an 85 percent increase in sales over last year. Diamante sales reached nearly 1,500 units, with additional sales of the all-new Diamante Wagon.
"We're working harder than ever to support our dealers and provide profitable programs for this new year," said Ormes. "And we're gearing up for our biggest motivator of the coming year -- the introduction of our all-new '94 Galant." MMSA will be showing its dealers the newly redesigned model for the first time later this week during the annual National Automotive Dealers Association meeting in New Orleans.
The 1994 Galant is the third generation of a successful model line for Mitsubishi Motors and is currently entering production at the company's U.S. assembly plant, Diamond-Star Motors in Bloomington/Normal, Ill. With its upcoming launch this June, the '94 Galant will further expand Mitsubishi's commitment to U.S. manufacturing and lift the company's production to a level where nearly 60 percent of MMSA's total sales volume will be American built.
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc. was established in 1982 by Mitsubishi Motors Corp., Tokyo, and markets a full line of subcompacts, compacts, sports coupes, grand touring sports cars, luxury performance sedans, sport wagons, light trucks and sport/utility vehicles.
