MITSUBISHI MOTORS' YEAR-END SALES OFF 7 PERCENT FOR '92 -- WHILE GEARING UP FOR STRONGER DOMESTIC VOLUME IN THE YEAR AHEAD

DETROIT, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Despite a year of economic downturn throughout the automotive industry, Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc. (MMSA) today reported year-end sales of 176,901 units, which included more than 64,000 domestically produced vehicles.
"While this year's 7 percent drop in sales reflects the overall decline in the market, it also equates to the phasing out of our current Galant in anticipation of the '94 model which is entering production at Diamond-Star Motors, our U.S. assembly plant," said Kevin Ormes, vice president of sales. Galant has been a core product for the company since its second generation introduction in 1988.
The all-new '94 Galant will be unveiled to members of the press today at the North American International Auto Show and is expected to enter dealer showrooms in early July.
According to Ormes, the company's primary focus for the mid-90s will be on its domestically produced vehicles, which will account for approximately 60 percent of Mitsubishi's U.S. sales. "With the addition of the '94 Galant to production at Diamond-Star, our two largest volume products will now be domestically built," said Ormes.
Mitsubishi's popular Eclipse sports coupe remains the company's No. 1 seller and for '92 reached nearly 54,000 units. Together with the upcoming production of Galant, Mitsubishi's U.S. production should reach 120,000 units annually.
The Diamante luxury performance sedan set record levels, reaching more than 22,000 units for the calendar year. Based on its success, MMSA will also be distributing the luxurious '93 Diamante Wagon, which is built by MMSA's sister company Mitsubishi Motors Australia Ltd.
Year-end passenger car sales reached 162,282 units, while December truck sales were up 124 percent from a year earlier.
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc. was established in 1982 by Mitsubishi Motors Corp., Tokyo, and markets a full line of subcompacts, compacts, sports coupes, grand touring sports cars, luxury performance sedans, sport wagons, light trucks and sport/utility vehicles.
