MITSUBISHI MOTORS' U.S. PRODUCTION PLANT HITS 500,000 --
ECLIPSE GSX ROLLS OFF DIAMOND-STAR LINE TO MARK MILESTONE EVENT
NORMAL, Ill., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc.'s (MMSA) U.S. production facility, Diamond-Star Motors Corp. (DSM), today celebrated production of its 500,000th vehicle, a 1993 red Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX sports coupe. The event, which took place today inside the state-of-the-art plant, featured addresses by distinguished guests including Dr. Hirokazu Nakamura, president of Mitsubishi Motors Corp., Tokyo; Tsuneo Ohinouye, chief executive officer of DSM; Rep. Thomas Ewing; and executives of MMSA.
In honor of the milestone achievement, Mitsubishi Motors and DSM have pledged a $50,000 donation to "Beyond the Books," a newly instituted volunteer foundation established to enhance educational programs in the community's District 87 and Unit 5 public schools. The donation includes an immediate $25,000 contribution to the organization from Mitsubishi Motors which will be matched by a $25,000 contribution from Diamond Star over a five-year period.
The 500,000th unit milestone marks additional recognition for MMSA. "Since the first Mitsubishi vehicle rolled off the Illinois- based manufacturing line in 1989, Diamond-Star Motors has consistently produced quality vehicles serving as the backbone for Mitsubishi Motors' sales growth in the U.S.," said Richard D. Recchia, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America.
"The award-winning Eclipse GSX contributes to more than 40 percent of our total sales in the American automotive marketplace," said Recchia. He also noted that DSM will begin production of the 1994 Galant mid-size family sedan early next year. With this move, the domestic manufacturing facility will build nearly 60 percent of all Mitsubishi Motors' vehicles sold in the United States.
Since its introduction into the U.S. automotive marketplace, the Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX has earned a reputation for driving excitement that has consistently placed it among the nation's leading automotive enthusiasts magazines' awards lists.
The sporty Eclipse GSX provides responsive handling with a smooth ride. Powered by a turbocharged, dual overhead-cam, 16-valve, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 195 bhp at 6,000 rpm, the Eclipse GSX is equipped with Mitsubishi's full-time all-wheel drive system, anti-lock braking system (ABS), a sturdy five-speed manual transmission and a limited slip differential.
On the inside, the aircraft-like cockpit surrounds its occupants with logically arranged, clear analog instruments. Standard features include air conditioning, power windows and power door locks, power mirrors, power rack-and-pinion steering, cruise control, ETR AM/FM stereo cassette with graphic equalizer and six speakers and a six-way adjustable driver's seat that includes controls for tilt, side bolsters, headrest positioning and lumbar support for added comfort. Leather seating surfaces, a compact disc upgrade and a pop-up sunroof are available options.
A subsidiary of MMSA, Diamond-Star Motors is one of the most technologically advanced automotive manufacturing plants in the world. The facility has the capacity to produce 240,000 vehicles, employs 3,100 workers and has built the award-winning Eclipse sports coupe since 1989. The next generation of DSM vehicles will be introduced in the mid-90s and will include an all-new platform that will form the basis of two- and three-door sports cars and a four- door sedan.
