MITCHELL REPORTS FIVE NEW MEXICO COMPLETIONS

 THE WOODLANDS, Texas, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Mitchell Energy & Development Corp. (NYSE: MND)t oday announced the completion of one natural gas producer and four oil development wells in Lea County, New Mexico.
 The Comanche State Unit No. 1 test-flowed 4.2 million cubic feet of natural gas and 182 barrels of condensate per day on a 17/64-inch choke with 2,400 pounds per square inch (psi) of flowing tubing pressure. Perforations were between 13,987 feet and 14,302 feet in the Morrow Sands formation of the Hat Mesa field. MEC Development, Ltd., a partnership in which Mitchell is the operator and general partner, holds 66 percent of the working interests in the producer; Conoco, Inc., owns 34 percent.
 The four oil producers, all shallow completions in the Yates formation of the Buffalo field, were:
 - -The Cochise "2" State No. 4, which tested at a rate of 126 barrels of oil per day on a 20/64-inch choke with 100 psi of flowing tubing pressure from perforations between 3,478 feet and 3,510 feet;
 -- The Cochise "1" Federal No. 2, which test-flowed at an average daily rate of 123 barrels of oil on a 1/4-inch choke with 175 psi of flowing tubing pressure from perforations between 3,455 feet and 3,472 feet;
 -- The Cochise "2" State No. 1, which test-flowed 97 barrels of oil per day on a 1/4-inch choke with 280 psi of flowing tubing pressure from perforations between 3,440 feet and 3,462 feet; and
 -- The Cochise "1" Federal No. 3, which pumped 68 barrels of oil per day from pere?en 3,364 feet and 3,460 feet.
 MEC Development, Ltd., holds 100 percent of the working interest in the four wells.
 Mitchell Energy continues to increase its activity in southeastern New Mexico, as the area offers substantial opportunities for low-risk oil and gas exploration and long-term development drilling. In the last three years, the company has increased its leaseholdings in New Mexico to more than 80,000 gross acres, up from 14,300 acres in 1989.
