MITCH WILLIAMS PITCHES A FULL COUNT OF MAALOX MOMENTS(TM); PHILLIES' USUAL CLOSER RECEIVES A MAALOX MOMENT(TM) AWARD

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- He steps onto the mound and you get that feeling in the pit of your stomach. The fans feel it, his teammates feel it, even the opposing team feels it. Anything could happen. Then it starts -- the opposing team scores a run on his first pitch. Next is two balls, two fouls and a fly out, yet the runner on third makes it safely across home plate. Then foul, foul, ball, single. By now, your stomach lets you know that this is it -- a full-blown Mitch Williams Maalox Moment(TM).
Memories of the fifth game of the National League Championship Series will burn in the minds (and stomachs) of Phillies fans for years to come. It seems that relief pitcher Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams delights in causing Maalox Moments(TM) every time he comes into a game. But Monday afternoon's game in Atlanta was too much even for the most devoted Philadelphia fan.
After pitching eight innings and helping the Phillies to a 3-0 lead, Curt Schilling got into a bit of trouble with an error on a routine ground ball. Manager Jim Fregosi decided to bring in his usual closer, Williams, to finish out the game and secure a Philadelphia victory.
Even though Mitch's stomach had been doing the "wild thing" the day before due to a slight case of food poisoning, he claimed that he felt fine as he went to the mound. But you have to wonder how his stomach felt as the ninth inning progressed and the fans saw a Phillies shutout turn into a tie ball game.
"Mitch has found a way to keep the fans on the edge of their seats until the final out," said James Barickman, Rhone-Poulenc Rorer's category development director for Maalox(R). "We know that stress from a big game often can trigger acid indigestion and heartburn in an athlete's stomach. But when Mitch is on the mound, he makes sure that everybody feels it. For most pitchers, Maalox Moments only last a moment, but with Wild Thing, you're stomach should be prepared for extra innings."
As a result of his efforts and contributions to the Phillies ball club, Mitch Williams has been selected to receive this month's Maalox Moment Award. Along with a supply of Maalox(R) tablets, Mitch also will receive a special "I'm Causing a Maalox Moment" T-shirt. In addition, he'll get a Maalox Moments Survival Kit just in case he has to pitch in games six and seven.
Phillies Manager Jim Fregosi and the National League Championship Series sportscasters each will receive "I'm Having A Maalox Moment" T-shirts and a supply of Maalox antacids to commemorate the stomach-burning fifth game.
The Maalox Moment Award is presented on a regular basis to individuals or groups who successfully manage a stressful situation that occurs in any aspect of their everyday lives. Past recipients include David Letterman, Barbara Bush, the coaches of the 1992 Superbowl teams, Jay Leno, Olympic figure skater Paul Wylie and President Bill Clinton.
