MISSION LABS UNVEILS FIRST FULL-COLOR, MOTION-VIDEO PHONE FOR PCs; MLI PC-FONE 5000 SENDS, RECEIVES VIDEO CALLS OVER EXISTING TELEPHONE LINES
SAN DIEGO, Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Mission Labs Inc. (MLI) today announced the introduction of the first full-color, motion-video phone for personal computer users that sends and receives video calls over standard phone lines. "This system brings human communications to the PC at last," said James Joyce, president at Mission Labs. "With the announcement by AT&T of the Videophone 2500 for consumers, we felt it was time to introduce our professional communicator product line."
The MLI PC-Fone is the first in a series of video-related products that Mission Labs expects to introduce in 1992. "Our primary goal at Mission Labs has been to introduce products that will make people more productive," Joyce said. "The PC-Fone accomplishes this by providing a low-cost way to combine video, audio, computer graphics and high- resolution document conferencing into a single system."
"The system allows video communications through a window on a PC with an ordinary modem," said Jim Dilettoso, director of research and development at Mission Labs. "We have all the features of the AT&T 2500 plus high-resolution color documents operating under Windows on a PC. We believe that the AT&T product will enhance our marketplace and create a demand for PC communications."
The MLI PC-Fone 5000 is a pair of PC boards for any AT class computer. The display window is sizable from three inches to full- screen with high-color VGA or NTSC resolution. Motion frame rate is comparable to the AT&T 2500. Full-color, high-resolution photos or documents can be sent in less than two seconds. The system uses JPEG compression standards for image documents and a proprietary compression method for the motion window. Mission Labs also plans to introduce MPEG and Fractal compression format systems in 1992 as well.
The PC-Fone 5000 development, led by Dilettoso, represents a new era in desktop communications. Dilettoso has been involved in movie colorization and video compression since 1986. "Multimedia producers, meeting managers and executives can meet without leaving their desk. Business charts, graphics and animation can now be fully integrated into instant communications," said Dilettoso.
The MLI PC-Fone 5000 will be available this spring direct from Mission Labs and its distributors. Price has not yet been released, but is expected to be a fraction of the cost of videoconference systems that utilize digital networks.
