MISS AMERICA VISITS BURROUGHS WELLCOME CO.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., Feb. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Reigning Miss America, Leanza Cornett, today visited the Greenville facility of Burroughs Wellcome Co., a pharmaceutical company which has been a leader in the fight against AIDS.
Cornett, who has dedicated her year as Miss America to focusing on programs for people with AIDS, was in Greenville to support the Philadelphia House, a temporary living center for homeless people with HIV/AIDS.
While in Greenville, the Philadelphia House arranged for her to tour the Burroughs Wellcome production facility responsible for the manufacture of Retrovir(R) brand zidovudine (AZT), the first antiretroviral drug indicated for use in certain adults and children with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Four other medications used in the management of HIV infection also are made at the Greenville facility.
Cornett addressed a group of Burroughs Wellcome employees and thanked them for their dedication to the fight against AIDS. "I appreciate what all of you do every single day to create a better quality of life for these people and to make it easier for the medications to get to people living with AIDS," she said.
Burroughs Wellcome has provided financial support to HIV programs in communities throughout the country since 1987. To date, the company has contributed more than $7 million in corporate gifts and grants to non-profit national and local organizations that provide HIV-related services.
Corporate giving supports community-based programs that educate people about early medical intervention and living with HIV disease. Grants have allowed local groups like the Philadelphia House to increase the availability HIV testing, counseling and outreach programs and to provide workshops on specific aspects of early intervention.
"There are many ways to fight this disease and it is the united efforts of many people like Leanza Cornett that can really make a difference in this epidemic," said Dr. Paul Winter, director of manufacturing documentation control and validation at Burroughs Wellcome.
Burroughs Wellcome has more than 1,800 employees at its Greenville facility who are involved in the production of the company's HIV medications and other prescription and non-prescription products. Burroughs Wellcome is a research-based pharmaceutical company with headquarters in Research Triangle Park, N.C.
