WHAT should a girl rely on to be sure of support under those strappy, one-shouldered dresses and boob-tube tops that are all the rage?

JULIET ASKEW took the plunge by looking at five of the latest strapless bras.

COTTON `multiway' bra, pounds 12, by Marks & Spencer (0171 935 4422). A sensible, practical bra. Good support, if a bit frumpy looking. More for day wear. STYLE: Plain 7/10.

LACE bra, pounds 22.99, from Empire (mail order 0345 200 400). Sexy style for evening wear, but not for wild dancing as cups are a bit flimsy. Goes up to a 36EE. STYLE: Racy 8/10.

LACE bra, pounds 45, by Valisere (01793 720 232). So pretty it is a shame to hide it! Lace could go lumpy under tight tops. Handy optional shoulder strap. STYLE: Feminine 8/10.

Flesh tone sateen bra, pounds 15.99, by Berlei (01525 850 088). Great for invisible look under clothes. Padded cups give a shapely bust line. Good value. STYLE: Uplifting. 8/10

WHITE sateen bra, pounds 19.99, by Wonderbra (01483 291 450). Even without strap to hoist you up this bra creates a cleavage! Smooth finish is good under clinging clothes and it's shaped for low-cut neckline. Stays put too. STYLE: Wonderful 10/10.
