MIRAMAX FILMS' 'LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE' IS THE HIGHEST GROSSING FOREIGN-LANGUAGE FILM OF 1993

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif., May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- With more than $5 million in its 13-week run, Miramax's "Like Water for Chocolate" becomes the highest grossing foreign language film of 1993, as well as the highest grossing Latin American film to date. Alfonso Arau's magical Mexican romance is in simultaneous release with his wife Laura Esquivel's novel of the same name, which is in its sixth week on the New York Times' Bestseller List. The novel is also the first book of its kind to be distributed simultaneously in English and Spanish-language versions -- and has made the San Francisco Chronicle Bestseller List at both No. 10 (in Spanish) and No. 2 (in English) this week.
Miramax expects to have "Like Water for Chocolate" on 200 screens this weekend, in a release pattern that is much wider than a traditional foreign language release. This reflects the tremendous word-of-mouth success among audiences that have not previously flocked to foreign language films, as well as exceeds that of Miramax's previous crossover phenomenon, "Cinema Paradiso," which in its 13th week of release, on 121 screens, had grossed $2.8 million.
Miramax Senior Vice President Gerry Rich comments, "We've never seen such enthusiastic responses from people exiting the theater -- which confirms for us that `Like Water for Chocolate' is a film that delivers to people of all ages and transcends the boundaries of a traditional foreign language film. It's really escapism at its finest, a blend of fantasy, magic and passion that is a wonderful alternative to the fare currently available to American audiences."
