MIPS Technologies Inc and Hughes Network Systems (HNS) have teamed up to deliver next-generation set-top box systems.

Under the three-year agreement HNS will use MIPS' MIPS32 4Kc microprocessor core in system-on-chips (SoCs) for its line of DIRECTV set-top boxes which are scheduled for release in 3Q'2001.

MIPS and HNS will also work together on the design of future platforms and MIPS will provide HNS with tools for the simulation and verification of the SoCs.

In addition HNS has standardised all of its system design activities, including its wireless networking products, on the 32-bit MIPS architecture.
