MINORITY AND WOMEN BUSINESS CERTIFICATION WORKSHOP SCHEDULED FOR CHESTER, FEB. 4

HARRISBURG, Pa., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The state Department of General Services will hold a one-day workshop in Chester, Pa., on Thursday, Feb. 4, to encourage minority and women businesses to participate in state contracts relating to the construction of a medium security prison.
The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the State Office Building at Chester Community Center, 2 South Eyre Drive.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars in subcontracting opportunities are available to state-certified minority and women businesses. Subcontracting opportunities are in construction-related fields such as demolition, asbestos abatement, concrete, masonry partitions, stairs, doors, hardware, drywall partitioning and heating-ventilating-air conditioning, plumbing and electrical systems and modifications.
At the workshop, the department's Minority and Women Business Enterprise Office staff will explain the application process to ensure that firms are certified by Feb. 18 when they may participate in the first phase of state contract opportunities involving the construction of the $80 million state correctional facility at Chester.
The construction of the facility, which will house 650 drug and alcohol offenders, is expected to create 500 temporary jobs. An additional 400 permanent jobs will be created after it is opened.
Businesses interested in becoming certified through the workshop should register with the Minority and Women Business Enterprise Office by calling 717-787-7380 by Feb. 2.
