MINNESOTA POWER SUBSIDIARY ANNOUNCES PAPER RECYCLING PLANT

MINNESOTA POWER SUBSIDIARY ANNOUNCES PAPER RECYCLING PLANT
DULUTH, Minn., Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Synertec, Inc., a subsidiary of Minnesota Power (NYSE: MPL), announced today a $70 million joint venture plant in Duluth to recycle office waste paper.
Superior Recycled Fiber Industries (SRFI) will produce high quality pulp from office waste paper to be used by Great Lakes area paper mills in making their printing and writing grades of paper. SRFI will be built adjacent to the Lake Superior Paper Industries mill in west Duluth.
Construction on the 135,000-square-foot facility is scheduled to begin in Spring 1992 with full recycling operations underway by late 1993. The plant will combine American, European and Japanese technology and directly provide approximately 25 new jobs. Peak construction employment on the project is expected to provide 200 jobs.
"Full operation of this plant means that annually some 120,000 tons of paper waste will be diverted from landfills," said Gerald Ostroski, Synertec president.
"All of the office waste paper that is currently being collected in the State of Minnesota would provide only about 25 percent of the raw material required for this new plant," Ostroski said.
"Clearly, SRFI will help move the paper industry toward its goal of increasing the use of recycled fiber in paper production, as well as add further diversity to the regional economy," Ostroski added.
Superior Recycled Fiber Industries will produce about 250 tons per day of recycled pulp. Nearly three-quarters of the plant's production capacity has already been spoken for by major producers of printing papers. They include: Blandin Paper Company, Grand Rapids, Minn.; Canadian Pacific Forest Products, Thunder Bay, Ontario; Consolidated Papers, Inc., Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; Lake Superior Paper Industries, Duluth; and Potlatch Corporations' Northwest Paper Division in Cloquet, Minn.
The remaining recycled pulp production will be available to the major customers and for sale to other area paper mills.
Pentair, Inc. (NASDAQ: PNTA) of St. Paul, Minn., Minnesota Power's joint venture partner in lake Superior Paper Industries, will share with Minnesota Power a 24 percent ownership interest in the new paper recycling facilities.
Announcement of the project was made in Duluth today where an estimated 200 people attended a public briefing at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center.
Synertec, the Minnesota Power subsidiary responsible for developing the new enterprise, was formed to identify and build projects that benefit the environment.
