MINNESOTA BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD TO ANNOUNCE 'WAR ON TOBACCO LOBBY'
The Minnesota Blue Cross and Blue Shield CEO Andy Czajkowski will hold a news conference at 2 p.m., today (Friday, April 10) in room 181 of the State Office Building in St. Paul. The purpose of the news conference is to announce a major grassroots campaign to get Minnesota citizens to urge their state legislators to drop a premium tax on Blue Cross/Blue Shield subscribers and instead pay for the costs of the HealthRight health care access proposal with an increase in the state tax on cigarettes of 11 cents, more than twice the nickel tax increase recommended by Gov. Carlson. In his news conference, Czajkowski will announce that the "Blues" are declaring war on the powerful tobacco lobby and backing their effort with newspaper ads calling the public's attention to how cigarettes contribute to health problems for Minnesotans.
