MINIVANS ON A RECORD PACE AS CHRYSLER SALES CLIMB
HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Corporation

(NYSE: C) today reported June total vehicle sales of 161,601, an increase of 7 percent over a year ago. It was Chrysler's fifth-straight monthly increase.
Light-truck sales of 101,843 -- nearly half of them minivans -- were up 23 percent, set a company record for June and resulted in Chrysler's second-highest monthly truck sales ever. Car sales of 59,758 were off 12 percent.
Minivan sales of 48,569 also gave Chrysler its second-best month ever for these vehicles as buyers continued to switch from traditional cars. Minivan sales of 242,256 this calendar year are up 25 percent over last year and 11 percent over Chrysler's 1988 record year.
"Our total vehicle sales have climbed back almost to where they were two years ago, before the economic slump really set in," said E.T. (Tom) Pappert, Chrysler vice president of Sales. "For the first six months of this year, our total sales are 851,701 -- up 10 percent over last year."
Adding to the big increase for trucks, Dodge Dakota posted a record month of 12,972 sales and topped its best previous model year, 1991, with three months left in the '92 model year. Jeep sales were up 32 percent as Cherokee and Grand Cherokee combined for nearly 18,000 units. Standard van sales were up 26 percent.
Dodge Shadow sales of 10,178 and Plymouth Sundance sales of 6,845 were up 31 and 45 percent, respectively, to lead car sales performance. LeBaron sedan and convertible sales also were up significantly.
Sales by division were: Jeep/Eagle, up 33 percent; Dodge, up 26; and Chrysler/Plymouth, up 16.
