 MINING ASSOCIATION RECOGNIZES FINANCIAL REPORTS
SPOKANE, Wash., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Northwest Mining

Association (NWMA) recognized four mining companies and one state agency for excellence in financial reporting at its 97th annual convention in Spokane last week.
Awards of Excellence were given to Placer Dome Inc., Vancouver, British Columbia, for the best annual report; Echo Bay Mines Ltd., Edmonton & Denver, for the best quarterly report; Stratabound Minerals Corp., Calgary, for the best exploration company report; Noranda Minerals Inc., for the best environmental disclosure; and to the Idaho Geological Survey, Moscow, Idaho, for its special annual report.
The reports were judged on graphics, technical information and financial information, according to Allan Marter, who supervised the competition.
"Mining companies haven't always done a good job communicating to their various stakeholders," Marter said, "but they have come a long way in the last few years."
Marter, an investor relations consultant out of Denver, hopes to standardize some of the financial reporting language used by mining companies to help investors and stock analysts who review financial reports.
Based on his creation of the financial report competition this year and his work on a state tax guide, the Northwest Mining Association presented Marter with the 1991 Starter's Award. This award recognizes those who start new activities for the 3,200-plus member association.
In addition to the five awards of excellence, the association distributed 12 honorable mention awards for financial reporting. These awards were received by Amax Gold Inc., Asarco Incorporated, Canyon Resources Corp., FirstMiss Gold Inc., Granges Inc., Hecla Mining Co., Hemlo Gold Mines Inc., Minnova Inc., Newmont Gold Co., Pegasus Gold Inc., Plexus Resources Corp. and Princeton Mining Corp.
More than 3,800 members of the minerals industry attended the NWMA annual meeting, which began on Dec. 1 with a technical course on explosives. The convention and trade show ended Dec. 6.
The Northwest Mining Association was organized in 1895 in Spokane to support the minerals industry in the Northwest. With headquarters still in Spokane, the Association now has more than 3,200 members throughout North America, representing all aspects of the minerals industry.
