MILWAUKEE OUTFITTERS HAVE SOLUTION TO INFECTED WATER SUPPLY

MILWAUKEE, April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Milwaukee-area outfitters Adventures Unlimited and Laacke & Joys typically help campers, backpackers and hikers purify water while on the trail. Now the stores find themselves in a position to help residents cope with the tough-to- defeat Cryptosporidium parasite that appears to have gotten the best of a Milwaukee water treatment plant. The stores carry Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered PUR brand water purifiers, which use a patented technology combining microfiltration with an antimicrobial tri-iodine that kills bacteria and viruses.
Cryptosporidium, a microscopic parasite resistant to chemical processing by metropolitan water treatment plants, also is being encountered more frequently by outdoor enthusiasts who rely on water taken directly from lakes and streams. As a result, Adventures Unlimited and Laacke & Joys regularly advise their outdoor recreation customers on portable systems for purifying drinking and cooking water. PUR microbiological water purifiers are effective on Cryptosporidium because the systems use a filter size of 1 micron. PUR microfiltration dependably captures Cryptosporidium because the cysts range from 4 to 8 microns in size.
To offer the same kind of protection for Milwaukee residents, both retailers are receiving additional PUR products from the Minneapolis- based manufacturer, Recovery Engineering, today and Saturday. Recovery Engineering also has supplied dealers with additional technical information on Cryptosporidium and the effectiveness of PUR water purification technology.
Adventures Unlimited co-owner John Browning said the PUR Scout, which retails for $60, is an alternative solution that could save residents from having to boil or buy water for several weeks. The Scout purifies one-half quart of water per minute. A replaceable purification cartridge lasts for up to 200 gallons. "The purifiers meet EPA standards for systems that claim to protect people from infectious microorganisms," said Browning. "Equally important, a household can have a safe supply of drinking and cooking water immediately."
Other PUR brand systems include the Explorer, a larger one-quarter- per-minute purifier, and the Traveler, a compact system, popular among international travelers, that purifies a glass of water instantly.

/NOTE: The Adventures Unlimited store in Mequon, Wis. is located on the Milwaukee River. Call John Browning to arrange a demonstration of the PUR Scout, taking water directly from the river and purifying it for drinking. Bruce Wolfenberger, at the State Street Laacke & Joys store, also is available to demonstrate the Scout./
