MILLIONS OF PENNIES TOTAL MORE THAN $75,000 FOR ATLANTA PROJECT
ATLANTA, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Spurred by penny donations from students, employees at Atlanta-area companies and countless other individuals and groups, the Pennies From Heaven campaign to collect money for the Atlanta Project passed the $75,000 mark today -- or more than 7 million pennies.
The Pennies From Heaven account at Wachovia has grown by more than $50,000 in the past two weeks, with pennies pouring in at a rate of 375,000 a day. Wachovia and Pringle Dixon Pringle are sponsors of the campaign, designed as a way for individuals to help fund former President Carter's project to address the social problems caused by poverty in Atlanta.
The total to date reflects collections done by students at several metro Atlanta public schools on Sept. 11, Penny Day. The schools included Dickerson Middle School, Annie E. West Elementary, Fayetteville Elementary, Westchester Elementary and Pebblebrook High.
Students at Columbia Elementary in DeKalb County on Friday will present to Wachovia the estimated 35,000 pennies they have collected for deposit in the Pennies From Heaven account. While the number of schools collecting pennies is not known, materials have been made available to an additional 130 schools in the area.
Hundreds of Atlanta-area companies have inquired about how to organize penny drives at their places of business, according to Jan Pringle, president of Pringle Dixon Pringle. Among the companies that have completed penny drives:
-- 1600 Parkwood Circle tenants (Balcor Property Management Inc.), who raised $550.
-- The tenants of One Atlantic Center (Prentiss Properties Limited Inc.) will be turning in approximately $1,000 on Monday.
-- Employees of BellSouth and Southern Bell collected more than $3,000 in pennies.
 -- A one-day drive at WAGA-TV yielded more than $2,400.
Other companies, schools and groups will continue to collect pennies through Oct. 31.
"We are delighted with how the Atlanta metro area has embraced Pennies From Heaven," said David H. Holton, Wachovia's regional manager. "It is heart-warming to see people of all ages put their pennies to work for the Atlanta Project."
