 MILLIONS NOT SEEKING ARTHRITIS TREATMENT
 DESPITE AVAILABLE CARE, HELP
TWINSBURG, Ohio, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Approximately six million Americans say they have arthritis but have not seen a doctor even though a number of medical treatments and other helpful services are available to make life with arthritis easier and less painful, according to the Arthritis Foundation.
May is National Arthritis Month, and the Arthritis Foundation and Revco Drug Stores encourage people to take advantage of the many services that can help you maintain or even improve your quality of life, despite the pain and limited movement arthritis may bring.
The Arthritis Foundation reports that one in seven people have arthritis. It affects people in all age groups, including as many as 200,000 children. The condition takes an especially heavy toll among women; about twice as many women as men have arthritis.
Often people with arthritis simply believe that they can treat themselves as well as a doctor could by taking over-the-counter medications. However, there are many forms of arthritis, and proper treatment depends on which form of arthritis a person has.
"If someone does not seek treatment or depends on self-medicating, irreversible joint damage may take place that could be prevented or delayed with proper care," said Arthur Grayzel, M.D., the Arthritis Foundation's senior vice president of medical affairs.
"Many people mistakenly view arthritis as a part of aging for which nothing can really help. The reality is that arthritis can bring pain, limited movement and make ordinary tasks very difficult. But there are ways to help you limit its impact and continue to enjoy life," said Michael O'Neill, Revco's vice president of professional operations.
Once the specific form of arthritis is identified, a treatment program, most often consisting of medication, rest, exercise and joint protection, can greatly reduce pain and increase use of the joints.
The pharmacists at Revco Drug Stores provide a personalized Patient Advisory Leaflet to help advise consumers on the proper use of the prescribed medication they are receiving. See your local Revco pharmacist for answers to your questions about prescription drug safety.
In addition to prescribed medical treatment, there are other options that can be very helpful. These include Arthritis Foundation services such as warm-water exercise classes to increase joint range of motion; self-help courses to provide a thorough understanding of the disease, medications and specific ways to make daily tasks easier; or even support groups to exchange helpful tips and encouragement with others who have arthritis.
"The keys to coping with arthritis are to recognize that arthritis is serious, see a doctor for a proper diagnosis, learn all you can about the disease, and take action to control its impact on your life by contacting the Arthritis Foundation," Grayzel said.
For information about arthritis and the services nearest you, contact your local Arthritis Foundation chapter or call toll-free the Arthritis Foundation Information Line at 1-800-283-7800.
