MILES INC. IMPLEMENTS NEW DIAGNOSTICS STRUCTURE
 TO BETTER SERVE WORLDWIDE CUSTOMERS
TARRYTOWN, N.Y., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Miles Inc.'s Diagnostics Business Group said today that it has completed significant steps in a restructuring intended to make it more competitive and to enable it to better meet the needs of its worldwide customers.
The restructuring, announced earlier this year, created five business units that are now staffed and have begun operating. These business units are: Clinical Chemistry, Diabetes, Hematology, Immunodiagnostics and Urine Chemistry. Miles' Diagnostics Business Group has been serving each of these markets, but until now its business has been organized along functional lines.
A reorganization of the worldwide marketing, sales and service function has created more direct lines to the group's customers. The International and North America Divisions have been discontinued. In their place, management has been concentrated at the group's world headquarters in Tarrytown. As a result, International Division Headquarters in Saint-Denis, France, is being consolidated into world headquarters. Business Group representatives for all countries now report directly to world headquarters.
"The new structure we have put in place will allow us to sharpen our focus on core businesses and bring the extensive expertise of our professional team closer to our customers," said Hans Lauterbach, executive vice president of Miles Inc. and president of the Diagnostics Business Group.
As a result of consolidations in manufacturing, marketing, sales and service, and various administrative functions, the group will reduce its worldwide work force by about 600 positions, or by 9 percent.
Affected are the Diagnostics Business Group's world headquarters in Tarrytown, with about 180 positions, and Elkhart, Ind., with about 70 positions. Other company locations around the world will be affected including Dublin, Ireland, with about 100 positions, Munich, Germany, with about 60 positions, and Saint-Denis, France, with about 60 positions.
"While it is always difficult to make decisions that affect the lives and livelihoods of people, we are making every effort during the restructuring to minimize the impact of our actions on people. In cases where reductions were unavoidable, we have treated people with fairness and compassion," Lauterbach said.
"Also, the entire diagnostics industry is feeling the pressure of generally weak economies, health care cost containment and increased competition. The primary goal of all our actions is to strengthen our organization so that we can compete more effectively in today's business environment."
Employees affected by the reduction will receive severance packages and outplacement services.
Miles Inc. is a chemical, health care and imaging technologies company based in Pittsburgh. In 1991, the company recorded net income of $101 million on sales of $6.2 billion.
The Diagnostics Business Group, one of the largest diagnostics businesses in the world, includes some 6,800 employees in 40 countries. The group's products, which range from in-home blood and urine test strips to large automated clinical laboratory analyzers, are distributed in more than 100 countries. Miles' Diagnostics Business Group competes in segments that represent nearly three-fourths of the $12 billion worldwide diagnostics market.
