MILES DIAGNOSTICS ANNOUNCES WORLDWIDE DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENT
TARRYTOWN, N.Y., Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Miles Inc.'s Diagnostics Business Group said today that it has entered into a worldwide agreement with Kyoto Daiichi Kagaku Company Ltd. of Kyoto, Japan, to market a Daiichi-developed, electrochemical biosensor diabetes monitoring system. It will be marketed under the trade name GLUCOMETER(R) ELITE(TM).
The agreement, effective immediately, gives Miles rights to market, distribute and service the instrument in all worldwide markets except for Japan and the People's Republic of China.
"This agreement reflects Miles' powerful global distribution network and reinforces our commitment to providing a full range of products and services to our customers in the diagnostics industry," says Anthony R. Wynn, Ph.D., senior vice president of Miles, Inc., and general manager of the Diabetes Business Unit based in Elkhart, Ind.
"The addition of the GLUCOMETER(R) ELITE(TM) will enhance our highly successful diabetes monitoring line of products, which includes the popular GLUCOMETER(R) 3, and strengthen our overall position in the diabetes monitoring business."
The GLUCOMETER(R) ELITE(TM), planned for launch in 1993, is a technique independent diabetes monitoring system which reduces patient involvement, thereby minimizing the potential for error in results. It is a little larger than a credit card and can be carried and used almost anywhere, making it ideal for an active person with diabetes.
The market for self-blood glucose monitoring is estimated at over $1 billion worldwide. At 15 percent annual growth, it is one of the fastest growing areas of medical diagnostics. There are approximately 12 million diabetics in the United States alone, of whom nearly 2.5 million perform daily self-monitoring of blood glucose levels. Approximately 500,000 people in the United States are diagnosed as having diabetes each year.
Miles Inc. is a Fortune 100, research-based company with major businesses in chemicals, health care and imaging technologies. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, the company employs some 26,000 people at its operations throughout North America. In 1991, the company's sales were $6.2 billion.
Miles Diagnostics Business Group, one of the largest diagnostics businesses in the world, includes some 6,000 employees in 40 countries. The group's products, which range from in-home blood and urine test strips to large automated clinical laboratory analyzers, are distributed in more than 100 countries. The Miles Diagnostics Business Group competes in segments that represent nearly three-fourths of the $12 billion worldwide diagnostics markets.
