MIGA STATEMENT ON VIDEO GAMBLING BILL

ST. PAUL, Minn., Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Officials of the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association (MIGA) today welcomed formal introduction of a bill by Rep. Jeff Bertram to authorize video gambling in privately owned hospitality establishments.
"Now it's up to these private interests to prove that neighborhood gambling is in the best interests of the people of Minnesota," said MIGA Chairman Myron Ellis.
Ellis said a preliminary review of the bill revealed no major surprises. Its intent, he said, is to permit private bar and restaurant owners to profit from video gambling.
"This bill represents a major shift in public policy for Minnesota," said Ellis. "Never before has our state considered authorizing gambling strictly for private profit. The people of Minnesota should think long and hard before they allow such a fundamental change in policy."
Ellis said the bar owners who propose to profit from this bill should be prepared to answer the same questions Indian tribes are being asked about gaming revenues. "How will your profits be spent?" he asked. "Who will benefit? How many jobs will be created? How will the community be served?"
