MIDWEST ENERGY SHIPS COAL TO SPAIN VIA ST. LAWRENCE SEAWAY

DETROIT, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Midwest Energy Resources Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of Detroit Edison (NYSE: DTE), has shipped nearly 60,000 tons of low-sulfur coal from Montana's Powder River Basin for export to Spain via the St. Lawrence Seaway.
The coal was loaded Sept. 2, at Midwest Energy's Superior, Wis., terminal onto Canada Steamship Lines' H.M. Griffith and Tadoussac vessels for passage through the St. Lawrence Seaway to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, said John Ethen, president of Midwest Energy. Near Sept Iles, Quebec, the self-unloading lake carriers will transfer the coal into a large Panamax class self-unloading bulk carrier for transshipment through the port of El Ferrol, Spain.
It was the second overseas shipment of coal from the Midwest Energy terminal; the first was in August 1991.
Early last week, Midwest Energy dedicated an expanded facility with a terminal capacity of 15 million tons that increases its ability to store, blend and ship additional types of coal. Midwest Energy annually transfers about 12 million tons of cleaner burning, low-sulfur coal mined in the western United States from rail cars to Great Lakes vessels. The vessels deliver the coal to Midwest Energy's customers, including Detroit Edison.
The coal was sold by Venture Fuels, a joint venture coal marketing partnership between Midwest Energy and Kennecott Energy Co.
