MICROTECH INTRODUCES 16MB SMARTMEDIA DIGITAL FILM CARD.

Microtech International, North Branford, Conn., has introduced a 16MB SmartMedia Card, which ranks as the highest capacity SmartMedia card available today. Microtech punctuated its commitment to SmartMedia technology even further by announcing their acceptance as a member of the SSFDC SmartMedia Forum, an international consortium of SmartMedia technology companies.

Microtech's SmartMedia 16MB is a 3.3v card that doubles the previous maximum capacity of SmartMedia cards. It features a single-level cell 128Mb (Megabit) NAND type flash device in a thin over-molded package, and is 100% compliant with the current version (v1.1) of SSFDC specifications. The Microtech 16MB SmartMedia card has been optimized to take advantage of the advanced technology of the new MegaPixel digital cameras that have dominated the market in the past year. The Microtech cards support all of the MegaPixel advanced CCD and lossless compression designs, providing rapid image capture while doubling the storage space.

"Image file sizes are increasing with each new generation of camera." said Al Conte, director of Digital Imaging Products at Microtech. "As this trend continues, the need for a larger capacity card such as our new 16MB becomes more of a necessity." he added. Conte went on to say that Microtech is committed to staying at the forefront of card design and capacity, and that even larger cards are in the works.

This commitment is further emphasized by Microtech's announcement of its acceptance as a member of the SmartMedia Forum. As a voluntary organization, the SSFDC Forum promotes SmartMedia[ordinal indicator, feminine], a small removable NAND flash memory card, as the de facto standard in the digital photography industry. According to Masanori Ihara, secretary-general of the SSFDC Forum, Microtech has been approved as a member as of September 28, 1998.

Membership gives Microtech access to all technical and strategic specifications on SmartMedia, which greatly enhances product performance and compatibility. It also allows the creation of products and solutions that remain functional over time, while remaining in line with SmartMedia's long-term technology roadmap.

Another recent product announcement is the Microtech SmartMedia adapter. This ATA compatible device supports all 3.3v and 5v SmartMedia cards from 2MB-128MB, and allows them to be used in a standard Type II PC card slot. With an MSRP of $89, the adapter delivers performance boosts of 30-40 times the speed of alternative floppy disk adapters.
