MICROSOFT CHOOSES GLYPH SYSTEMS AS SOLE AUTHORIZED RESELLER OF ARABIC AND HEBREW WINDOWS IN U.S.
ANDOVER, Mass., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Glyph(R) Systems, was selected by Microsoft(R) Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MSFT) as the sole authorized reseller and support provider for Microsoft Hebrew and Arabic language products in the U.S., including bilingual versions of Microsoft's Windows 3.1 graphical user interface. According to Bryan Nelson, Microsoft's director of international operations, "People in the past have gotten foreign support from the Middle East and Israel. We are real pleased to be working with Glyph in that providing support in the U.S. has been a problem, but through Glyph we now have found an effective way to provide a high level of customer satisfaction. This is our way of addressing our customer satisfaction needs to make sure people in the U.S. do have a vehicle for receiving high quality local support." Glyph announced that both the Hebrew and Arabic versions of Windows 3.1, developed by Microsoft, are now shipping. The bilingual versions of Windows 3.1 are fully compatible with most standard Windows applications and they include TrueType(tm) scalable fonts in Hebrew and Arabic, respectively. Each of the new Windows packages has an enhanced version of Windows Write and Windows Paintbrush, giving users immediate access to true bilingual word processing and illustration programs. Both products provide right-to- left character entry and word wrap, so any Windows application designed to access these bilingual features has the ability to enter text correctly in either language. Arabic and Hebrew Windows are not copy protected and add no new hardware requirements above those established by the standard Windows 3.1 program. Harry Ruda, executive vice president of Glyph, predicted that, "The availability of system level right-to-left support and scalable Arabic and Hebrew fonts in Windows, will simplify the creation of new and more sophisticated Arabic and Hebrew language applications and encourage software developers to enter these international market segments. Microsoft already took the lead in this effort by releasing Hebrew and Arabic versions of its popular Excel 4.0 spreadsheet, which work in conjunction with the corresponding versions of Windows 3.1. Bilingual versions of other popular Microsoft Windows applications are expected to be released later this year." Additional Microsoft products distributed by Glyph include the Hebrew and Arabic versions of Microsoft Works 2.0 for DOS, the Arabic MS-DOS 5.0 operating system, Arabic and Hebrew versions of Excel 4.0 for Windows, and software development kit at (SDK) supplements for each of the bilingual Windows. Glyph is marketing the products directly to end users, as well as distributing them through selected dealers serving the Arabic and Hebrew computing markets in the U.S. Customer and technical support are provided by Glyph, directly to owners of the Microsoft products in the U.S. Ruda noted that Microsoft selected Glyph as its sole authorized reseller of Arabic and Hebrew products specifically because of Glyph's technical expertise in foreign language fonts. Glyph supplied the Arabic TrueType fonts used in Arabic Windows 3.1 and provided development services for some Hebrew TrueType fonts.
