MICROSOFT CHAIRMAN BILL GATES OPPOSES 601/602

SEATTLE, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released today by The Committee for Washington's Future:
Bill Gates statement in opposition to Initiatives 601 and 602:
Today, I am publicly declaring my personal opposition to Initiatives 601 and 602. My opposition to these initiatives is based primarily on my concerns that these initiatives, if passed, would have a profound negative impact on the higher education system in the state of Washington.
I have always been a believer in making investments for the long term. Adequate funding for higher education is one of the best long-term investments that we can make. My company and other high technology companies in this state depend on a high quality educational system to provide talented engineers, scientists and the other employees in order to compete successfully in a global marketplace.
Initiatives 601 and 602 could significantly reduce the discretionary funds that are available for state higher education programs. Over time, higher education funding could suffer disproportionately. And, although I do not agree with some of the recent tax legislation, I do not think that these initiatives are the right answer.
