MICROS AND GRANITE SIGN EXCLUSIVE OEM AGREEMENT THAT WILL EQUIP
RESTAURANT WAITSTAFF FOR WIRELESS DATA COMMUNICATIONS
AMHERST, N.H., May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- MICROS Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: MCRS), an international market leader in hospitality information systems, and Granite Communications, Inc., a pioneer in the emerging wireless data communications market, have signed an exclusive OEM agreement that is expected to change the way restaurants deliver service to customers and handle point-of-sale (POS) transactions.
Under the agreement, MICROS will purchase Granite's recently introduced VIDEOPAD(tm) personal data communicators for integration into MICROS' point-of-sale systems. MICROS will write application-specific software to be used on the VIDEOPAD and introduce the system into the market as the "MICROS Hand Held Touchscreen." MICROS currently has some 75,000 POS systems installed at more than 25,000 customer sites worldwide.
The VI. It is a hand-held wireless personal data communicator with an easy-to-use touchscreen. Waitstaff input customer orders via the touchscreen and transmit them instantly to a central base station via spread spectrum RF signals. With two-way communications, servers are notified if an item is unavailable before they leave the table.
"Hand-held technology is strategic to the hospitality industry, as it provides a unique means of improving customer service, increasing table turns, and reducing costs," said Reay Sterling, Jr., president and CEO of MICROS Systems, Inc.
"We chose to align with Granite because of the ease-of-use of its touchscreen, which will reduce training costs. We also liked the high capacity and throughput of Granite's communications protocol, which drives and controls the spread spectrum radio transmission," Sterling continued.
The MICROS Hand Held Touchscreen system is scheduled for delivery in fall 1992 and will be initially available on the personal computer-based MICROS 4700 Hospitality Management System.
"MICROS' large market share in point-of-sale terminals in the restaurant and hospitality industries, combined with its extensive worldwide sales and distribution network, make it the ideal Granite partner for this high-growth market," said Pierre Dogan, Granite chief executive. "MICROS also has extensive capabilities in building custom applications for its customers, which will help achieve widespread use of the wireless technology in the hospitality industry," Dogan added.
Under the agreement, Granite will also provide MICROS with software tools to assist in customizing future customer applications.
