BOTHELL, Wash., Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- MicroProbe Corp., based here, today announced Harvey J. Hoyt, M.D. has been promoted to chief executive officer, replacing John L. Bishop who has resigned his position. Allan G. Cochrane has been promoted to president and chief operating officer. Both were appointed to the company's board of directors.
MicroProbe has developed a proprietary and unique technology based on the design and synthesis of oligonucleotides (the short chains of nucleotides which are the building blocks of DNA and RNA) to develop new therapeutic compounds and diagnostic tests. The company has utilized such technology to develop, and is currently marketing, its DNA-probe based diagnostic systems, including a system that tests for the three microorganisms commonly associated with vaginitis.
MicroProbe's efforts to develop therapeutics are focused on (1) gene blockers, which act by specifically binding to, and inactivating, the DNA of disease-associated genes; and (2) protein blockers, which act at least in part by selective inhibition of certain proteins (i.e., enzymes and regulatory factors) which are critical to the growth and reproduction of cells and viruses.
Dr. Hoyt, 52, joined MicroProbe in 1991 as president and chief operating officer of the therapeutics division. From 1989 to 1990 he was vice president, medical and scientific affairs at Applied Immune Sciences Inc. From 1984 to 1989 he was president, scientific and medical affairs for the diagnostics group of Baxter Healthcare Corp. From 1981 to 1984 he was vice president of research and development of the Dade Diagnostics Division of American Hospital Supply Corp. From 1979 to 1981 he was vice president of the medical and research operations at Richardson-Merrel Pharmaceuticals, and from 1974 to 1979 he was vice president of research and medical affairs at Care Corporation. Dr. Hoyt received his M.D. from the Washington University School of Medicine.
Cochrane, 40, joined MicroProbe in May 1993 as vice president, sales and marketing of the diagnostics division. From 1975 to 1993, he was employed at Difco Laboratories in various sales and marketing positions. From 1988 to 1992 he was director of business development, and from 1991 to 1993 he was vice president, sales and marketing. Cochrane received his B.S. in biology from Robert Wesleyan College.
