 MICRONICS COMPUTERS NAMES TWO DIRECTORS
AND ANNOUNCES MANAGEMENT AND PRODUCT LINE CHANGES
FREMONT, Calif., May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Micronics Computers Inc. (NASDAQ: MCRN), a leading supplier of high-performance system boards incorporated in high-end, IBM-compatible personal computers sold by OEMs and VARs, today announced the appointment of two board members, organizational changes in senior management, and its decision to phase-out certain system products from the company's product line. Micronics Expands its Board of Directors
Dado Banatao and Minsiu Huang will join Micronics' board of directors, increasing the number of directors to six. Banatao, chairman and co-founder of S3 Inc. was also a founder of Chips and Technologies, where he held executive-level positions, most recently as vice president and general manager of the Advanced Products Operation. In 1984, Banatao co-founded and served as vice president of engineering of Mostron Inc. He also held various engineering management positions at Intersil, Synertek and Seeq Technology, where he was director of engineering for logic products. Banatao has a B.S.E.E from Mapua Institute of Technology and a M.S.E.E. and C.S. from Stanford University.
Huang, a co-founder of the company and its vice president of operations since April 1991, rejoins the board after having served as a director from the company's inception to December 1991. Management Changes
Micronics also announced the creation of a new office of the president, reporting to the board of directors. Chuck Chan and Dean Chang will each serve as co-president in addition to their other responsibilities as board member and senior vice president of research and development and strategic planning, respectively. Chan stated, "I feel that the two-man office of the president is the best way to ensure the continuity of Micronics' operations until a new chief executive officer is chosen."
Reporting another organizational change, Micronics announced that Harvey Wong, a co-founder of the company, will retire on May 31, 1992. Wong, a director of the company from its inception until December 1991, has held several senior management positions with the company and has served as its vice president of systems integration since April 1991. Phase-Out of System Products
The company will phase-out its portable systems and PCX desktop workstation products by the end of this quarter. In announcing the decision, Chan stated that the phase-out of portable systems and PCX products will allow Micronics to focus its resources on its core business of providing system board products at the high-performance, higher gross margin end of the PC market. "To date, our marketing objectives for both portable systems and PCX products have not been met," noted Chan. "We believe we can better leverage Micronics' research and development expertise and fast time-to-market capabilities by focusing on our core system board business. And we intend to continue growing that business. Our future plans include not only introducing new products incorporating leading-edge technology, but also developing the European market and other distribution channels for all of our products.
"While many other companies in our industry have reported declining sales and operating losses in these tough times, the outlook for Micronics is, in fact, very encouraging. We have a strong balance sheet with no debt. By any measure, Micronics has been extremely successful with a string of 22 consecutive profitable quarters since the company's founding five and a half years ago. Last quarter our unit shipments and net sales were the highest in the company's history, and early sales results this quarter continue that trend. We believe that Micronics is well-positioned for continued growth in a rapidly changing industry."
