MICRONICS CELEBRATES SHIPMENT OF 1,000,000 SYSTEM BOARDS; 1992 SHIPMENTS REPRESENT U.S. MARKET SHARE OF ALMOST 16 PERCENT FOR 486-BASED SYSTEMS

FREMONT, Calif., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Micronics Computers Inc. (NASDAQ: MCRN) today announced that it has shipped over 1,000,000 system boards since its founding in 1986. More importantly, volume in 1992 exceeded 475,000 boards -- nearly matching the combined total for the company's first five years of operation. Micronics, the leading U.S. supplier of advanced system boards, attained a market share of almost 16 percent for all Intel 486-based systems shipped in the United States in 1992, based on initial 486 market estimates from InfoCorp. Volume for fiscal 1993 continues strong; the company has shipped more than 200,000 advanced VESA-compatible Local Bus system boards since the product family's launch in September 1992.
"We are extremely pleased with the market demand for our latest products," stated Steven P. Kitrosser, chairman and chief executive officer of Micronics. "We will continue our efforts to grow this demand, while actively working to streamline manufacturing efficiency and reduce unit product costs. These combined efforts are intended to improve our profitability and ultimately, shareholder value."
Kimball Brown, vice president of Santa Clara, Calif.-based market research firm InfoCorp., noted: "The 486-based market grew rapidly in 1992, and we see demand for these systems continuing to increase in 1993 as the industry crosses over from 386 to 486 technology. In addition, systems designed around the VESA Local Bus standard are in great demand, and we see this continuing in 1993."
Micronics will be commemorating the 1,000,000 milestone with the presentation of a gold-plated system board to one of its customers.
