MICRONICS ANNOUNCES THIRD QUARTER RESULTS

FREMONT, Calif., July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Micronics Computers Inc. (NASDAQ: MCRN) today announced results for the third quarter ended June 30, 1993. Net sales for the quarter totaled $47.2 million, an increase of 15 percent over the prior year's third quarter net sales of $41.1 million. Third quarter net income reached $2,700,000 (24 cents per share), up 61 percent over net income of $1,681,000 (15 cents per share) reported in last year's third quarter. Micronics has now reported 27 consecutive quarters of profitable operations since its founding in 1986.
For the nine months ended June 30, 1993, the company's net sales increased 17 percent to $139.7 million from $119.9 million for the same period last year. Net income increased 14 percent to $7,848,000 (70 cents per share), compared to $6,882,000 (62 cents per share) in the prior year period.
During the quarter, Micronics began volume shipments of its next generation VL-Bus products, including the new JX30 system board, one of the industry's price and performance leaders. The company also announced that a second version of the JX30, planned for volume shipment later this year, will feature energy-efficient technology in support of the EPA's new Energy Star Program. This technology will allow Micronics' customers to market Energy Star-compliant computers to the federal government, the world's largest purchaser of computer equipment.
To further strengthen its marketing and sales organization, Micronics in June named Robert N. Gunn to the new position of vice president of marketing. Gunn brings over 13 years of experience in high-tech sales and marketing to the position. Concurrently, the company announced that Larry Barber, formerly vice president of marketing and OEM sales for Micronics, had assumed the newly created position of vice president of worldwide sales.
The company also expanded its sales channels during the quarter with the addition of a new OEM account and the signing of a new national distributor. Micron Computer, Inc., a subsidiary of $500 million Micron Technology, is using the company's products in six new lines of personal computers, all of which are shipping currently. Micronics also continued its aggressive distribution channel expansion with the addition of Merisel, Inc., one of the nation's largest wholesale distributors. Merisel is now offering Micronics' product family to its base of 50,000 resellers worldwide.
