MICRONICS ANNOUNCES COMMITMENT TO PCI; DEVELOPER AND LEADING PROVIDER OF VESA LOCAL BUS PRODUCTS ENDORSES PCI

FREMONT, Calif., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ - Micronics Computers, Inc. (NASDAQ: MCRN), the leading U.S. supplier of advanced system boards for the personal computer industry, today announced that it will be providing products utilizing Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI), the industry's latest Local Bus technology. Micronics has developed both 486 and Pentium-based system boards featuring PCI Local Bus technology. These products will complement the company's successful line of VESA Local Bus products.
"There has been considerable pressure to announce these products since our PCI technology demonstrations at last year's Fall Comdex trade show," stated Steve Kitrosser, chairman and chief executive officer of Micronics. "We led the industry with our introduction of products incorporating the VESA Local Bus standard, and they turned out to be the most successful line in our history. PCI Local Bus is our new opportunity, the technology is solid, the specification is complete, hardware and firmware support is now available. We see a tremendous amount of market interest for this new Local Bus technology.
"As we have stated, our new line of products based on PCI will complement our existing VESA Local bus products," continued Kitrosser. "We further believe that both product lines will co-exist for some time to come, since each addresses a unique market segment."
Micronics' first PCI products will ship this quarter. According to a company spokesman, specific product information and pricing will be announced in the coming weeks.
"We expect PCI to become a strong addition to our portfolio of leading-edge technology products," explained Robert Gunn, vice president of marketing at Micronics. "Micronics is both a pioneer and a market leader in providing Local Bus technology. By applying our Local Bus engineering expertise to the PCI architecture, we are able to offer the best possible PCI solutions. After investing thousands of engineering hours performing compatibility testing, as well as optimizing the performance of our new PCI designs, we feel confident that our PCI products will now meet Micronics' high quality standards. We will be using the same aggressive roll-out plan we honed for the VESA Local Bus introduction to bring to market a wide range of PCI products with solid technology and proven compatibility."
 PCI Technology
Developed in 1991, The Peripheral Component Interconnect Local Bus is a high-performance 32- or 64-bit-wide data pathway for communication between the CPU and peripherals. In June of 1992, Intel and several other computer-industry companies, including Micronics, formed the PCI Special Interest Group (SIG) to develop and promote the PCI specification as an industry standard.
The PCI bus offers the advantages inherent in a Local Bus design -- an extremely high data transfer rate between the CPU and peripherals subsystems such as video, audio, graphics and network connections. In contrast to older bus designs such as ISA, EISA, MCA or the PCI architecture results in dramatically improved system performance -- up to 8 times greater.
PCI's specification allows for the future migration to a 64 bit wide bus, doubling the maximum theoretical data throughput to 264 Mbytes/sec. In addition, the PCI specification enables computer systems to utilize auto-configuration and plug-and-play capabilities. These new features will allow users to add new components without having to manually set jumpers or switches, avoiding conflicts in I/O interrupts between various devices.
