MICROCOM ANNOUNCES ELECTION OF JOHN C. RUTHERFORD TO MICROCOM BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 NORWOOD, Mass., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Microcom, Inc. (NASDAQ: MNPI) today elected John Rutherford to Microcom's board. John is currently the managing director of Talisman, Inc., a strategy consulting and M&A advisory group based in Boston. Prior to starting up Talisman in the U.S., John was a director of the Boston-based management consulting firm Bain & Company, Inc.
 John Rutherford joined Bain in 1974, was named a vice president in 1979 and became a director in 1987. He was responsible for large segments of Bain's strategy consulting work and had management responsibility for the Boston office. In his client work, he established Bain's mergers & acquisitions practice and managed a number of international projects in Europe, Canada, South America, Japan, and the Asia/Pacific.
 A native of Wellington, New Zealand, John earned a B.E. degree from that country's University of Canterbury in 1967. He received an M.S. in computer science from the University of Connecticut in 1974 and an MBA from Harvard University the same year.
 Talisman has been working with Microcom on strategy related assignments since July of 1993. According to James M. Dow, president and chief executive officer of Microcom, "I am very enthusiastic about John joining the board. John's strategic planning capabilities and his broad experience advising other boards of directors and CEOs will greatly increase our ability to achieve our objectives."
