MICRO CADAM, RUNNING ON THE UNIX OPERATING SYSTEM, NOW SHIPPING
RELEASE THAT OFFERS COMPLETE COMPATIBILITY WITH DOS
BURBANK, Calif., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- CADAM Inc., an IBM (NYSE: IBM) company, announced the MICRO CADAM(R) V1R5 for both the DOS and the UNIX operating systems is now shipping from its Southern California manufacturing plant to CAD users worldwide. With this announcement, MICRO CADAM V1R5 now supports the IBM RISC System/6000(R) AIX operating system.
CADAM is extending MICRO CADAM to computing environments beyond DOS as part of its recently announced focus to provide superior CAD/CAM/CAE products exclusively for the desktop. "This release is significant because it offers complete interoperability within the product family," said David Brazier, director of MICRO CADAM brand management. "MICRO CADAM provides identical function and direct data sharing across multiple environments. We are demonstrating that you can file a drawing from MICRO CADAM in the DOS environment and then call that same drawing up on the IBM RISC System/6000."
Developing identical function across dissimilar operating systems presented the software engineers with considerable technical challenges. "To support disk compatibility, we needed to be able to create DOS directories on a floppy disk from an AIX machine," said Mark Pinson, director of MICRO CADAM software development. "There were no system calls available to do this, but our product does it. That's audacious!"
"Delivering MICRO CADAM V1R5 on time reaffirms our commitment to world leadership on the desktop," Brazier continued. "IBM's AIX operating system leverages MICRO CADAM's acknowledged productivity and functional richness by offering users additional flexibility in their choice of operating environment." With UNIX multitasking capabilities, MICRO CADAM users can increase their productivity because they can now execute more than one program at a time. For example, designers can "plot" their drawings, while continuing to interactively alter their MICRO CADAM designs.
MICRO CADAM V1R5 is the third MICRO CADAM update released during the last 14 months. It increases MICRO CADAM's already superior function for the mechanical designer and draftsman by providing five dimensioning standards -- ANSI, IBM, ISO, JIS and standard, an engineer-friendly user interface that demands only a minimal number of keystrokes for most operations, and a powerful data manager.
New features include MICRO CADAM Access -- which provides an open architecture for users and third party development partners. In addition, the Raster feature solves the unique concerns of companies automating design and drafting for the first time. Raster enables first time CAD users to quickly convert their paper blueprints to electronic MICRO CADAM models. Users of other CAD systems who are disenchanted with their current product may also use the Raster feature to transfer their drawings from other systems into MICRO CADAM format.
MICRO CADAM products released for the UNIX operating system include the power design tool: MICRO CADAM PLUS; Data Transfer, for exchanging drawing data with mainframe-based CADAM systems; Alternate Character Sets, for drawing annotation in non-English characters; and the open architecture offering: Access. MICRO CADAM PLUS on the UNIX operating system lists for $4,795.
CADAM Inc. was launched as a separate company by Lockheed Corp. in 1982. In January 1990, CADAM Inc. was acquired by IBM, its strategic partner since 1978. According to Daratech, CADAM now holds a strong number two position in the desktop CAD market with a 17.5 percent market share. In Japan, MICRO CADAM dominates the market with a 45 percent market share.
CADAM's corporate headquarters are located at 1935 N. Buena Vista St., Burbank, CA 91504. Engineers and designers in the United States and Canada requesting information about CADAM's world class product line can contact CADAM at 800-255-5710 or through sales operations at 818-841-9470.
