 MICHIGAN TRAVEL BUREAU DIRECTOR NAMED
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Michigan Commerce

Director Arthur Ellis today named Thomas M. Altemus, director of Sales and Marketing for the Grand Canyon Railway, as director of the Michigan Travel Bureau.
Altemus, 36, of Henderson, Nev., has 15 years' experience in the travel industry, including 10 years in Europe. He has a strong background in marketing and sales.
"We're fortunate to have someone of Tom's ability and experience," said Ellis, who introduced Altemus to industry leaders at the 9th Annual Governor's Conference on Tourism in Grand Rapids. "His international marketing experience will help position Michigan and the Great Lakes region as a major travel destination."
The Michigan Travel Commission conducted a nationwide search for a new travel director. Nearly 400 persons applied for the position.
Altemus and his wife, Christine, are originally from Battle Creek. "Returning to Michigan has been a long-standing dream of mine and a great honor," he said. "Michigan has great potential and I hope to maximize it."
Prior to working for Grand Canyon Railway, Altemus held sales and marketing positions with Scenic Airlines, American Express and Travelers International.
The Michigan Travel Bureau has a staff of 30 and an annual budget of $6.3 million. It promotes Michigan tourism through advertising, marketing, public relations, publications, corporate partnership programs and a response system that answers the queries of more than 500,000 travelers a year.
Travelers spend $6.4 billion in Michigan each year, generating a $1.4 billion payroll for more than 113,000 workers and more than $356 million in state and local taxes.
Altemus, who begins April 13, succeeds John Savich as director. Savich resigned in November to take a similar position with the State of Washington.
Altemus and his wife have a 2-year-old daughter, Bonnie.
