MICHIGAN TOURISM INDEX FINISHES HIGHER

 MICHIGAN TOURISM INDEX FINISHES HIGHER
DETROIT, March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The Michigan Tourism Index (MTI)

spurted 10.3 points between the third and fourth quarters of 1991. By rising from a depressed 144.1 level in the summer to 154.4 in the fall, the MTI simultaneously reversed its prior five-point drop and reached a new quarterly peak.
The strong end-of-year performance was largely a reflection of accelerating vehicular traffic volumes. Increased traffic at Canadian points of entry may explain portions of the extraordinary rise in the vehicular travel series. Lower gasoline prices and partial economic recovery were the principle factors accounting for greater vehicular travel and also gains in Mackinac Bridge crossings.
Compared with the fourth quarter of 1990, only the occupancy rate at Michigan lodgings showed a decline.
For the full calendar year of 1991, the MTI averaged 149.8, up 0.7 percent from an average level of 148.7 in 1990, and 1.1 percent above the 148.1 level in 1989.
