MICHIGAN NATIONAL MAKES BANKING EASIER FOR THE HEARING-IMPAIRED
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Michigan's hearing- impaired adult population will find dealing with their bank a lot easier now -- at least if their bank is Michigan National Bank. Customers can open new accounts, apply for loans or receive account information and assistance by phone, 24 hours a day, every day, by calling Michigan National's new toll-free "telecommunications device for the deaf" (TDD) number, 1-800-MNB-4TDD (1-800-662-4833). The service became available on June 1.
Michigan National is utilizing a new modem which converts any IBM- compatible personal computer into a TDD when used in conjunction with FullTalk software.
The modem and software were designed and developed by Dillip Emmanuel, 39, a hearing-impaired engineer with Maryland-based Microflip Inc. The modem enables the bank to communicate with all standard TDD telephones, as well as other FullTalk users.
The modem, which works much faster than traditional TDDs, sends electronic mail and pre-scripted messages and functions as an answering machine. Both sides of the conversation are displayed on the computer screen with different colors for incoming and outgoing text. The conversation can be stored on diskettes or printed for future reference.
In announcing the implementation of the new technology for Michigan's hearing-impaired, Michigan National Corporation's Senior Vice President David A. Lind stated: "Michigan National Bank is committed to providing a full range of banking services to all customers. We feel it is necessary to communicate directly with hearing-impaired individuals in order to provide quality banking service. The new modem is a very exciting technological option for banking and is a major advance over standard TDD telephones."
Marcy Warheit Colton, executive director of the Oakland Family Services-Community Services for the Hearing Impaired, commended Michigan National for its "major commitment to serve the hearing-impaired community."
"This new TDD will enable hearing-impaired people to have the same access to banking services that other customers at Michigan National have always enjoyed," she said.
