MICHIGAN KMART PHARMACIES HELP LAUNCH STATE'S FIRST MAMMOGRAM-AWARENESS PROGRAM

TROY, Mich., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Michigan Kmart Pharmacies have joined the Michigan Department of Public Health (MDPH) to help increase awareness of the need for early breast cancer detection. 110 Kmart Pharmacies across the state now display in-store signage and sweepstakes entry forms for women 40 years or older to sign up for the first-ever "Mammogram Sweepstakes." $10,000 in Kmart shopping sprees will be awarded in prizes. The Perrigo Company (NASDAQ-NMS: PRGO) of Allegan, Mich., supplier-partner to Kmart, is providing the sweepstakes prizes.
"Kmart's goal is to help create greater awareness and encourage women to have regular and early cancer-detecting mammograms," said Divisional Vice President F. Kevin Browett, RPh. "Through this program, Kmart can work with the State of Michigan to improve health-related education programs in our state."
The sweepstakes is part of an intensive MDPH outreach effort for the statewide Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program (BCCP). The campaign consists of educational radio and television advertising spots supported by posters distributed to participating physicians and public health clinics, point-of-purchase materials, and sweepstakes entry forms in Michigan Kmart Pharmacies.
It is estimated that one in eight women will get breast cancer sometime during their lifetime, with women 40 years old and older falling into the greatest category of risk.
"It's our hope that the number of women who actually receive mammograms will increase significantly," added Browett.
The promotion is designed to make women aware of the seriousness of breast cancer and the need for annual screening. The sweepstakes was designed to draw attention to this problem and to give women an incentive to have a mammogram.
The advertising campaign and sweepstakes was created by Detroit- based advertising/public relations agency Brogan & Partners.
The sweepstakes is open only to women who are Michigan residents and 40 years of age or older. Official entry forms are available at Kmart Pharmacies or at the service desk of stores without pharmacies. Women are asked to complete an official entry form by having it validated by the physician or clinic which performed the mammography procedure. Mammograms must be completed by June 30, and all entries received by July 15, 1993. No purchase or validation absolutely necessary. See stores for details.
The sweepstakes grand prize is $1,000 in Kmart gift certificates. Other prizes include: 10 first prizes of $500 in Kmart gift certificates; 20 second prizes in $100 Kmart gift certificates; and 40 third prizes in $50 Kmart gift certificates.
Kmart Corporation (NYSE: KM) serves America with over 4,000 retail outlets in all 50 states in the United States and in Puerto Rico, Canada, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
