MICHIGAN EDUCATION ASSOCIATION ISSUES CONTRACT NEGOTIATION UPDATE
EAST LANSING, Mich., Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Contract negotiations in more than 30 Michigan Education Association locals statewide have reached the critical stage, MEA officials announced today.
Members in 159 teacher units and 167 support personnel units remain without contracts as the beginning of the school year draws near.
Major issues hindering settlements in these units include: Salary/wages, class size, and employee involvement in school improvements. Bargaining is also slowed due to deep cutbacks in the number of state mediators who are available to assist both sides during negotiations.
The following is a list of local bargaining units identified by the MEA where negotiations have reached a critical stage. Work stoppages are possible in these districts if the current bargaining climate continues.
A news release will be issued daily (Monday through Friday) by the MEA regarding the bargaining status of its unsettled and critical units until mid-September.
