MICHIGAN BELL ANNOUNCES CUSTOMIZED PHONE NUMBERS:
 LET 555-JACK CALL 555-JILL
DETROIT, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Michigan Bell's new Custom Number Service lets customers personalize their telephone numbers much as they do when they buy "vanity" license plates for their cars.
A customer establishing service for the first time ordinarily is assigned a phone number that's randomly drawn from the company database. With the introduction of Michigan Bell Custom Number Service, businesses and residence customers now may request specific customized telephone numbers for a one-time charge of $38.
"Customers have told us they want more control over their numbers," said Laird Spencer, Michigan Bell director of marketing and business development. "Now they are limited only by their imaginations -- and the availability of the number they want."
Subscribers to Custom Number Service will be able to pick any telephone number -- not currently in use -- from the bank of numbers normally assigned in their area, Spencer said.
"With Custom Number Service, people can tell friends to call them at 555-LISA or 555-CALL or 555-6000," he said. "The possibilities are amazing."
While a Custom Number might spell a person's name (555-MIKE) or a cute acronym (555-PALS), only a numerical listing will appear in phone directories.
In the past, the company has helped customers obtain such numbers on an informal basis -- a practice Spencer called "costly and time- consuming."
"Starting today, we'll make sure you get the number you want if it's available for a modest one-time charge," he said.
Michigan Bell annually assigns approximately 60,000 new phone numbers to residence and business customers.
