MICHAEL RADFORD AND 'THE POSTMAN' ('IL POSTINO') RECEIVE HONORS AT LONDON FILM CRITICS AWARDS

Film Wins Best Foreign Language Film and Best British Director Awards

LOS ANGELES, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The London Film Critics' Circle has honored Michael Radford and THE POSTMAN (IL POSTINO) with the prestigious ALFS Awards for Best British Director and Best Foreign Language Film.

In a ceremony at the Savoy Hotel on Friday, Radford was on hand to accept the award for Best Foreign Language Film, and returned to the podium moments later to an enthusiastic ovation when named Best British Director.

"It is a special and satisfying honor to be recognized in your own country, and for that I am grateful to the London Film Critics' Circle. It's an honor not only for me, but one I would like to share with all my Italian collaborators and friends who made this such an amazing experience. Although I've said it before, I only regret that Massimo couldn't be with us. He'd be having the time of his life," said Radford.

It was Massimo Troisi's love of Antonio Skarmeta's novella "Burning Patience" that inspired Troisi and Radford to bring the tale of a simple Italian postman and the great Chilean poet Pablo Neruda to the screen.

Recently, THE POSTMAN (IL POSTINO) made history in becoming the first foreign language film in 22 years, and the first Italian film ever, to be nominated for Best Picture. The film received five Academy Award nominations in all, including Best Actor (the late Massimo Troisi), Best Director (Michael Radford), Best Adapted Screenplay (Anna Pavignano, Michael Radford, Furio Scarpelli, Giacomo Scarpelli and Massimo Troisi), and Best Dramatic Score (Luis Bacalov). The 68th Academy Awards will be presented on March 25.

THE POSTMAN (IL POSTINO) is also a contender for five British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards: Best Actor, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Score and Best Non-English Language Film.
