MICHAEL KRANEFUSS TO RETIRE: LED FORD RACING PROGRAM RESURGENCE

DEARBORN, Mich., July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Michael Kranefuss, director of Ford Motor Company's (NYSE: F) Special Vehicle Operations (SVO), the entity that oversees Ford's motorsport activities, will retire on Nov. 1, at the end of the 1993 racing season.
"Michael leaves the company having laid a foundation that ensures continued success in many forms of motor racing," Robert L. Rewey, vice president - Marketing and Sales Operations, who has overall motorsports responsibility at the company, said today. "Michael has made a great contribution to Ford in his 25 years of dedicated service. We'll miss him and wish him every success in the future."
Kranefuss, 55, said he felt the time was right to move on to other areas of motorsports outside the corporate environment.
"I'm very proud of all we have accomplished in bringing Ford's racing program back to the level it is now," Kranefuss said. "But there are other things that I would like to do in racing that I can't do in my role at Ford, so I'd like to try and do some of them while I'm still young enough to give them a chance.
"I'm confident Ford's racing programs are strong enough to handle a change like this, and I'll do everything I can to make sure there's a smooth transition."
Kranefuss came to the United States from Germany in September, 1980, to lead the company back into auto racing after a 10-year North American hiatus from the sport.
During his tenure at SVO, Ford drivers and teams have captured 75 major championships, including the 1992 NASCAR Manufacturers' Championship, and the company made a successful return in IndyCar racing with eight wins in the program's first 25 races.
Prior to his North American assignment, Kranefuss held a number of positions in Ford's European motorsport operations, including motorsport director of Ford of Europe from 1976 through 1980.
