MICHAEL JORDAN AND NIKE GIVE $200,000
FOR STUDENT PROGRAMS IN CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS
CHICAGO, Oct. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Chicago Public School students learned a lesson from Michael Jordan and Nike today at Nike Town. And yes, it's the shoes.
Showing their combined concern for extracurricular activities threatened by recent budget cuts, Jordan and Nike President Richard Donahue presented to the city's public schools two checks, each for $100,000. A group of outstanding high school students, representing their peers, were joined by Superintendent Ted Kimbrough in accepting the checks.
And why is it the shoes? The checks were written on the side of a limited edition pair of Nike "Air Jordan" Olympic basketball shoes.
"The checks on these shoes are guaranteed not to bounce, but to help Chicago's kids fly through another school year of important activities," said Jordan, as he presented the checks.
"We understand the academics are important," said Donahue. "But extracurricular programs teach valuable lessons about teamwork, discipline and self-confidence. It would be a tragedy if Chicago students were deprived of these programs."
"These kids here today are absolute proof of the value of these programs," said Jordan. "Sports was and is a major part of my life and playing on my high school team was where I learned to love basketball. I would have hated to have that taken away from me."
Nike, Inc., the world's number one sports and fitness company, is based in Beaverton, Ore. Nike Town opened in Chicago on July 2, 1992.
