TORONTO, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Lac Minerals Ltd. (NYSE: LAC) announced today that Michael P. Bates has joined the company as president - Lac North America. Dr. Bates, who has been in the mining and metals industry for over 25 years, most recently with RTZ, has extensive operating and managerial experience in Europe, Southern Africa and North America. In addition to heading Lac's North America unit, Dr. Bates will be a member of the company's newly-formed five-person executive group.
Dr. Bates' appointment fills a key role in Lac's newly decentralized structure. Last month the company announced that it was decentralizing its operations to form two semi-autonomous regional business units -- Lac North America and Lac South America. These regional units will operate as profit centres responsible for regional exploration, development and operations, as well as human resources, accounting and finance functions. Lac's corporate office in Toronto, in addition to supporting these regional units, will focus on strategic planning, corporate development, senior finance, and international exploration. A new executive group, which is part of the corporate office, will include the chief executive officer, the general counsel, a chief financial officer and the presidents of Lac North America and Lac South America. Michael Richings was recently appointed president - Lac South America.
Peter A. Allen, president and chief executive officer of Lac Minerals, said, "Over the course of his career, Dr. Bates has earned recognition for his use of creative solutions and innovative practical measures to increase production, sales and profits under challenging conditions. His proven operating track record, combined with his reputation as a motivating leader and team builder, make him an ideal choice to manage and develop Lac's North American business unit going forward. He will also be an excellent addition to our core management team."
Prior to joining Lac, Dr. Bates was with London-based RTZ, the world's largest mining company, for over 12 years. Since 1991, he headed U.S. mining operations at Salt Lake City, Utah-based Kennecott Corporation, an RTZ subsidiary, where he was responsible for seven North American mines that employed over 900 people.
From 1981 to 1991, Dr. Bates held senior management positions, including chief executive, deputy chairman, and chief operating officer, at Rossing Uranium Ltd., RTZ's uranium affiliate in Namibia. Dr. Bates worked with U.K.-based British Steel Corporation from 1967 to 1981, where he was responsible for all aspects of production and management in the ironmaking departments of integrated steel works.
Dr. Bates holds BSc and Ph.D degrees in Metallurgy from the Royal School of Mines of Imperial College in London and the University of Wales. He and his family will relocate to Toronto from their current Salt Lake City residence.
